Feb 25: Southasia’s Romance with Democracy: An Enduring Relationship?

The Southasian region has been undergoing complex and profound socio-political changes in recent times. The focal point of this phenomenon is the relationship between democracy and societal values, aspirations, and cultural identities. It is crucial to understand this intricate relationship to comprehend the challenges and opportunities that shape the region’s political landscape.

With recent general elections in Bangladesh and Pakistan, followed soon by India and Sri Lanka, this is a good time to delve into Southasia’s complex relationship with democracy. To explore this issue, the Southasia Peace Action Network (Sapan) is organizing a webinar titled “Southasia’s Romance with Democracy: An Enduring Relationship?

The webinar aims to delve into the multifaceted relationship between the democratic political process and various socio-political elements in Southasian countries. By examining how democracy interacts with societal values, aspirations, and cultural identities, we hope to foster a deeper understanding of the region’s socio-political dynamics and explore ways to improve cross-border relationships and promote peace and stability in Southasia.

We expect this seminar to be of interest to civil society organisations, government officials and policy makers, academics and researchers, media and communication people, those in the Southasian diaspora, and of course anyone who is interested in the idea of democracy as a process, not an event.

Speakers* include prominent democracy and rights advocates from around the region: Ahmed Bilal Mahboob, Pakistan; Harsh Mander, India; Prof. Imtiaz Ahmed, Bangladesh; Nalini Rathnarajah, Sri Lanka; Ramesh Adhikari, Nepal. Peace and education rights activist Dr Sandeep Pandey will deliver the closing remarks.

The event will be hosted by feminist and activist Khushi Kabir in Dhaka, with the discussion moderated by journalist Beena Sarwar in Karachi.
