‘Southasia peacemongers’ express solidarity with Bangladesh citizens, urge protection of rights, restoration of democratic order

August 7, 2024

The Southasia Peace Action Network, Sapan, stands in solidarity with the students and citizens of Bangladesh in their pursuit of justice and democracy, and express respect for their courage and resilience. We strongly support an orderly and peaceful transition to a democratically elected government, with full respect for human rights.

It is imperative that swift actions are taken to uphold democratic principles and expedite the path toward peace and security for the Bangladeshi people.

The Southasia Peace Action Network is an umbrella platform calling for the governments and peoples of the region to work towards soft borders, engage in economic cooperation and collaborate on all issues. More than 90 organisations have endorsed the Sapan Founding Charter since its initiation in March 2021.

Closely monitoring the situation in the country, we also express our deep concern and condolences over the tragic loss of life during the recent protests. All unlawful killings must be thoroughly investigated and those responsible held accountable.

We believe the current situation can be resolved peacefully, and urge immediate intervention to stop and control the ongoing attacks on minorities and other vulnerable groups. We support all efforts to guard and protect minority communities and public property, which must be done in order to rebuild the nation in a positive way.

Finally, we urge all stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue and collaborate to ensure and protect the rights and freedoms of all citizens. We believe that lasting peace and stability can be achieved in Bangladesh through collective effort and unwavering dedication to democratic values.

We express our congratulations on the choice of Dr. Yunus as Chief Advisor of the Caretaker Government and hope for a quick resolution once the caretaker government is installed.
