Film screenings: ‘Democracy in Debt: Sri Lanka Beyond the Headlines’ & ‘Khamosh Pani’

Join us this weekend for two powerful film screenings, each followed by thought-provoking discussions that delve into Southasia’s political, social, and cultural narratives.

Saturday, December 7: ‘Democracy in Debt: Sri Lanka Beyond the Headlines’

The critically acclaimed documentary Democracy in Debt unpacks Sri Lanka’s economic and governance crises, offering an insightful look beyond sensational headlines. Directed by journalist Beena Sarwar and supported by the Pulitzer Center, the film weaves personal stories with expert analysis to present a gripping narrative of democracy under siege.

Sunday, December 8: ‘Khamosh Pani’ (Silent Waters)

The feature film Khamosh Pani (Silent Waters), directed by Sabiha Sumar, explores themes of identity, communal harmony, and the ripple effects of political extremism. Set against the backdrop of Pakistan’s turbulent political history in the 1970s, the film follows a widow whose quiet life is upended by rising religious conservatism. Winner of multiple international awards, Khamosh Pani is a poignant exploration of resilience and cultural upheaval.

Both screenings will be followed by discussions featuring esteemed panellists, filmmakers, and community leaders. These conversations aim to deepen understanding of the films’ themes, connect them to contemporary realities, and inspire action for peace and justice in Southasia.

These events are hosted by the Southasia Peace Action Network (Sapan) in collaboration with local community partners.
