About the film

Maa Bhoomi (1979) is a landmark classic of Indian parallel cinema that depicts the historic Telangana Rebellion (1946–1951).

Set in the princely state of Hyderabad, the film follows the journey of poor landless peasants as they rise in armed revolt against the autocratic rule of the Nizam and the oppressive jagirdari feudal landlords. Driven by slogan-cries for land, liberty, and dignity, the peasant uprising inspired generations of anti-colonial resistance, labour organising, and anti-feudal struggles across South Asia and beyond.
